My Favourite Christmas Films | Blogmas Day 15

I feel like I have a love-hate relationship with Christmas films. I love watching them because they're perfect for getting one into the festive spirit, but boy, are they cheesy and not to mention cliche. But let's be honest, I'm still going to be watching all of the films listed here back to back on Christmas day as well as many of the days leading up to it!

Christmas Films
The Grinch - Does much need to be said here? This film is an absolute classic, based on Dr Seuss' story of 'The Grinch who Stole Christmas'. The young Taylor Momsen's rendition of 'Where Are You Christmas?' gets me every year and beautifully expresses that feeling of having lost the 'magic' of Christmas one experiences as a child. On a side note, can you believe that 'The Grinch' was released almost 15 years ago?!
Love Actually - One of the few Christmas films that aren't targeted at a family audience, this is a favourite for many adults. It's very cheesy, a complete chick flick, and perhaps would make more sense having been set on valentines day rather than plonked into a Christmas setting. However, for those that love the cheese, it is a brilliant film and one can't deny that it has one of the best casts that you'll find in a seasonal film.

Christmas Films

The Nightmare Before Christmas - Another film which is getting unbelievably old. this is now 20 years old! I am very much a Tim Burton fan and, in his trademark style, this animation is a Christmas film like no other. Only Tim Burton could combine Halloween and Christmas to make a spooky, festive masterpiece - this is one of the few Christmas films that I could never get sick of! Parallels have been drawn between 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'The Grinch' so if you've seen one but not the other, you may like it!
The Polar Express - This film is another which has been based on a book, although admittedly not one that I have read. I don't at all like the animation style but wanted to include it on this list nonetheless because when one looks past that, it is a magical yet haunting movie which doesn't follow the traditional paradigm of the jolly, cheesy Christmas film.

  5. I've seen all of those except Love Actually, I'll have to give it a whirl this year. (: Absolutely LOVE Home Alone and have you watched Arthur Christmas or Rise of the Guardians? I think they're more on the untraditional side and they're animated. (-:
